Let’s start off by unwrapping the concept of the shadow self, a term created by Carl Jung, which refers to the hidden aspects of our personality that we often ignore or suppress (Weaver, 2022). This journey of self-exploration is not just about facing our darker aspects but also about discovering the potential and strengths that lie within these hidden parts of ourselves.

 

Using a practical example that we explored in my first book, we look at the classical story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which serves as an excellent metaphor for our own internal exploration. In the narrative, Dr. Jekyll creates a potion that transforms him into his shadow self, Mr. Hyde. This transformation highlights the struggle between the conscious self and the unconscious aspects of our personality. Hyde represents Jekyll’s darker, more primal impulses, the parts we usually suppress. This duality reflects the internal battles we all face between the person we present to the world and the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden.

 

By engaging with our shadow self, we seek not to eliminate these aspects but to understand and integrate them into our conscious being. This process allows us to control our subconscious influences and opens the doorway to significant personal growth and self-discovery—allowing us to welcome all parts of our being, even those we believe to be unworthy.

The behaviors have become such a normal part of our routine that we no longer pay attention to them.

In this stage, we uncover the origins of our shadow traits, often revisiting past experiences or traumas to gain insight into how they were formed in the first place. Trauma can occur at any stage of life, often taking root in childhood. However, it's also common for individuals to encounter traumatic events in adulthood. These experiences, whether they occur in early years or later in life, can have profound and lasting impacts on a person's emotional and psychological well-being. This step is usually a deeply reflective one that builds resilience and seeks to empower you as you identify past hurts, triggers, and perceptions that no longer serve you.

 

The final step is integration. This stage involves accepting and incorporating your shadow traits into your conscious awareness. Rather than trying to eliminate these aspects, you learn to understand and harmonize them with your overall personality.

By affirming positive beliefs, you challenge and gradually reshape your internal narrative, which is central to this process. This practice is instrumental in shifting your perspective and encouraging a transformation from within. As you repeat these affirmations, you’re speaking to your current self and nurturing the seeds of your evolving self. It’s a journey of aligning your thoughts with the vibrancy and potential of your complete being, transforming the nuances of your shadow into sources of strength and insight (Elizabeth, 2020).

How Animal Characteristics Help Inspire Your Journey

 

In our guide, the owl, lion, bear, fox, elephant, dolphin, and horse will embody different aspects of our psyche, guiding our Shadow Work (Drymalski, 2019). Each animal symbolizes specific qualities and strengths to discover and weave into your personal growth narrative.

 

These shadow animals are archetypal energies within our unconscious mind, offering guidance in understanding the hidden parts (Horsley, 2023). By identifying with the spirit animal that provokes a strong reaction in us—whether it’s wonder, fear, or admiration—we open the door to self-awareness and personal transformation. For example, an animal characteristic you instinctively connect with or find challenging mirrors aspects of your personality that you may have repressed or denied. So, engaging in meditation, repeating affirmations, and visualizing interactions with your shadow animal can reveal insights into your life experiences and emotional state. These animals serve as a gateway to self-healing, urging us to embrace our vulnerabilities and to learn from their unique energies, what they signify, and their traits. Whether through physical or symbolic actions, the guidance from these animals can inspire our steps for individual growth and emotional healing. Shadow animals, as our allies and teachers, inspire our path to the inner shift needed to heal, helping us dissolve limiting beliefs and patterns of behavior that no longer play a part in who we are today.

The dolphin, playful and intelligent, symbolizes harmony and balance.

 

The horse, with its free spirit, represents the drive for freedom and the power of intuition.
